Graph types
Display your data as one of 26 different graph types in Grapher 5. Combine multiple graph types to present your data in a completely new way! Alter any property of any of the graph types to create compelling new graphs.
| |
Line and Scatter plots display data as a line or symbols. Combine line and symbols or use only the line or only symbols. Display the data as a traditional 2D line/scatter graph.
|
| |
Ribbon/wall plots are similar to line plots, but are shown in 3D!
|
| |
3D Line/Scatter plots are used to display the location of points with three variables. Display the data as lines and symbols and add plot labels.
|
| |
Step Plots display data as vertical and horizontal lines. Display your step plot as either 2D or 3D.
|
| |
Bubble Plots display data with varying sized symbols. The size of the symbol is dependent on a third variable. Change the bubble to any symbol! In Grapher 5, you can use a 2D bubble plot that displays three variables or a 3D bubble plot that shows the change in four variables.
|
| |
Bar Charts display data as adjacent or stacked bars. Choose to have vertical or horizontal bars. Bar charts can be displayed as 2D or 3D!
|
| |
Floating Bar Charts display the difference between two variables. Choose to have vertical or horizontal bars. Choose between 2D and 3D floating bar charts!
|
| |
Function Plots display mathematical functions. Plot Y as a function of X, or plot a parametric equation where X and Y are a function of a third variable, T. Function plots can be shown in a 2D or 3D orientation.
|
| |
Hi-Low-Close Graphs display a range of Y values at each X value. These plots are commonly used to display the high, low, opening and closing of stock values, though Hi-Low-Close graphs are also used for many other purposes. Grapher 5 introduces a new variation on the hi-low-close graph, the candlestick graph.
|
| |
Polar Graphs display degree, radian or grad data versus a radial distance. The degree, radian or grad data are displayed on a circular angle axis. The second axis is a radial axis showing the distance from the center of the circle.
|
| |
Polar Function Graphs display mathematical functions. Plot radius as a function of angle, or plot a parametric equation where both the radius and the angle are a function of a third variable, T. The angle axis can be in degrees, radians or grads data.
|
| |
Polar bar charts allow direct comparison of two variables in polar coordinates. Similar to a regular bar chart, the polar bar charts allow you to determine which variable to compare against the angular axis. Display in degree, radian, or grad data.
|
| |
Rose Diagrams display degree, radian or grad data versus a radial axis. Like histograms, Rose Diagrams display statistical data, showing the number of occurrences of an event that fall within a specific angular region. Bins are fully customizable in rose diagrams!
|
| |
Wind Charts graph frequency vs. wind direction. Bins are created according to the wind speed. The frequency can be viewed as counts, relative frequency, or as percentages of relative frequency. Bins are fully customizable!
|
| |
Pie Charts show data as proportional slices of a circle. Each data value is divided by the sum of the data to determine the size of the slice. Display pie charts in 2D or 3D!
|
| |
Ternary diagrams show the relative proportions of three variables on three axes. Choose to show the relative proportions as percentages or as fractions. Add lines to connect the points on the ternary diagram! Display any column for the labels or show relative proportions for labels!
|
| |
Histograms display data separated into groups or bins. Add labels, a Gaussian fit, and display the Y axis as relative frequency to change the display of this graph. Display histograms as either 2D or 3D!
|
| |
Box-Whisker plots are commonly used to show the min, max, median, and lower and upper quartiles for a particular group. The caps at the end of each box indicate the extreme values (min and max). |

Associate any number of fits with a single curve. Change the line style, color and width for each fit. Applicable statistics are available for each fit. The resulting statistics are copied to the clipboard or displayed in a report window. Export fit curve data to a worksheet to calculate additional statistics. Change the range of data used to create the fit curve and the range of values to display the fit curves individually.
|
|
Template Graphs
Create a graph with the desired colors, number formats, tick mark spacing, legend styles, etc., and save it as a template graph for use with multiple data sets.
|
|
Project Files
Create a graph with the desired worksheet and save it as a project file. Project files save the data used inside the file. After the graph is created and saved as a project file, the external worksheet can be deleted.
|
|
Axes
Grapher has four axis scales: linear, logarithmic (base 10), natural logarithmic, and probability.
Use Grapher's default settings or specify custom settings for all axis parameters. Set the axis scale, change the axis length and starting position, add additional or duplicate axes, change axis limits, enter an axis title, add grid lines, break the axis, or hide the axis on your graph.
On each axis, you control the major and minor tick frequency and spacing or you can use Grapher's default settings. If the data uses date and time as one of the data columns, axis labels are automatically generated using dates and times.
In addition, manual date/time labels can be created or labels can be read from a worksheet, allowing you to use any type of tick labeling. |
|
|
|
Date and Time Compatibility
Use date and time entries in the worksheet as a data column in Grapher 5. Grapher will automatically use date and time labels on the axis. Clip the curve, limit the axis minimum and maximum using date and time values. Set axis tick marks based on a calendar frequency such as once per month, twice per year, or once per every four hours.
|
|
Error Bars
Error Bars are displayed on Line and Symbol Graphs and on Bar Charts. Display error bars for the average value, sample standard deviation, population standard deviation, or standard error of the mean. Or, calculate custom error bars in the worksheet and display them on the graph.
|
|
Labels and Curve Filling
Labels can be added to most graph types. All properties of the labels can be changed easily, including numeric format, adding bold or italics, changing the font size or style, or changing the label color. In addition, labels can be moved so that neighboring labels do not overlap. Grapher 5 adds the ability to quickly move labels for most graph types with the mouse. Select only the label you want to move and effortlessly drag it to a new location. Labels can also be moved with the keyboard for finer adjustments.
Most graph types also support curve filling. Fill can be defined between two curves or by using a single curve. With a single curve, fill above, below, to the left, or to the right of the curve. Choose to fill to the axis minimum or maximum or to a customized data value.
|
|
Text Editor
Easily add text objects to graphs using Grapher's text editor. Select any typeface, font size and color for individual characters within the text block. Add superscripts, subscripts and symbols to your text. Automatically enter current dates and times. Create complex mathematical equations and include them in your graph.

What's New in Grapher 5
Easy to use, always available Property Inspector makes editing any object a snap!
New in Grapher 5 is a Property Inspector. Editing graphs has never been easier or faster than with the property inspector. No need to double click on your plot to make changes. Now, select the plot, with one click make the change to the graph, and the graph updates immediately! Forget OK buttons and cumbersome dialog boxes. After making the change to one object, select any other object and the Property Inspector updates immediately with the properties for the new object. The helpful property inspector makes editing fast!
Preview the Graph Before you Open It!
If you have multiple graph files in the same folder, you already know that it can be difficult to choose which is the correct graph file to open. Now, select any Grapher 5 graph file and click the Preview button. An image of what the file contains will appear making the selection process in choosing the right graph easier than ever!
Customize Toolbars!
Grapher 5 gives you the ability to customize any toolbar. Add any Grapher menu command to your toolbar to have the commands you want readily available as quick-click buttons. Buttons can also be removed from any toolbar, giving you the custom look you desire.
Move 3D Graphs Interactively!
Quickly and intuitively rotate any 3D graph with the mouse! Simply click and drag the graph to a new orientation!
Moving Plot Labels Just Got Faster!
Do the labels in your graph overlap? Grapher 5 has added a more convenient and easy method to move the labels -- with the mouse! Click on any plot label and drag it to a new location. No confusing keyboard keys to press and no need to tab through multiple labels to move the overlapping label.
Lock an Object's Position!
Place any object anywhere on the page. Once the object is positioned exactly where you want it to be located, lock the object. The lock prevents the object from accidentally being moved, but still allows you to edit any other properties of the object.
Display Only a Portion of Polar Plots!
Grapher 5 has added an enhancement to all polar plots -- the ability to limit the portion of the graph plotted. Now, display only the portion of the graph you desire!

Create 4 New Graph Types!
Four new graph types have been added to Grapher. Create new polar bar charts! If you prefer 3D orientations to your graphs, create the new 3D pie chart. Two new 3D XYZ plots have also been added to the program -- 3D XYZ bar charts and 3D XYZ bubble plots. Now, you can have three independent variables for your bar charts and four variables (including the bubble size) for your bubble plots! In addition, all of the previous graph types are still included in the program: 2D line, scatter, step, function, bubble, bar, floating bar, histogram, polar, polar function, rose diagrams, wind charts, pie, ternary diagrams, box and whisker, and hi-low-close graphs and the 3D ribbon/wall, step, function, bar chart, floating bar chart, histogram, and 3D line/scatter plot.
Polar Bar Chart Graphs
Polar bar charts are similar to regular bar charts, except that the plot is displayed on polar axes.

3D Pie Chart
All pie charts display categories as percentages of a whole. But, by using the 3D pie chart, your graph becomes more aesthetically pleasing and still displays your data accurately! This impressive graph inserted into your next report will impress your readers and effectively display your data!
3D XYZ Bar Chart
Display your bar chart data as never before -- with three independent variables. Add additional bar charts to compare multiple categories!
3D XYZ Bubble Plot
The same features as a 2D bubble plot are now available in a 3D bubble plot! Only Grapher gives you the ability to compare four variables with this unique graph type!
Candlestick Graph
Create your hi-low-close graphs in a candlestick format. This graph allows you to quickly and easily determine whether your stock was up or down in any day by looking at the color!
Improved Exponential Label Format!
Create your graph exactly as you want it to be, by removing the "1x" from the axis labels! Now, your graph is completely ready for the publishers, without any additional editing.
Fully Customizable Symbols!
Grapher 5 adds the ability to change the line and fill color separately for symbols. Make the symbol line color any desired color and the symbol fill color any other color.
Move Pie Chart Labels!
Grapher 5 has added the ability to move pie chart labels! Simply click on the label and drag it to a new location. The line automatically moves to follow the label!
Use Picture Fill Patterns!
Give your graphs a unique look by filling with any picture! Stretch or tile any bitmap to fill an area.

Change Legend Display Individually!
Do your legends require individual settings? Does the number of symbols or the length of the line for your legend differ from plot to plot or on the same graph? Grapher 5 now allows fully customizable legends! Choose to display zero, one, two or three legend symbols. Change the number of symbols or the length of the legend line for each legend separately!
Improved Backwards Compatibility!
Need to send a Grapher file to a co-worker who uses Grapher 3 or Grapher 4? No problem! Save the file as a Grapher 3 or Grapher 4 GRF! The file can then be opened, edited, and printed in Grapher 3 or 4. If you don't want to send the data in addition to the graph file, send only a Grapher 4 GPJ! The project file retains all of the data needed to recreate the plot!
Advanced Area Calculations!
Calculate the area under your curve to any baseline value! The area tool now shows the area above the baseline, below the baseline, and the total area!
Grapher Supports Numerous Formats!
Export in the formats desired by many publications! Create PDF and EPS files directly from Grapher without needing a printer! The EPS and PDF export formats have been added to Grapher 5 to complement the already existing twenty other export formats!
